New Delhi, April 15: The political landscape is buzzing with activity regarding the central government’s proposal for women’s reservation. On Wednesday, a significant meeting of opposition parties was held at Mallikarjun Kharge’s residence in New Delhi. Senior leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, attended the gathering, which also saw representatives from Shiv Sena (UBT), NCP (Sharad faction), and the Aam Aadmi Party. The focus was on strategizing around the Women’s Reservation Bill and the proposed amendments associated with it.
The government is moving forward with the Nari Shakti Vandan Act, aiming to implement it ahead of the 2029 Lok Sabha elections. This proposal suggests increasing the number of Lok Sabha seats from 543 to 850, with 273 seats reserved for women. This change is viewed as a significant structural shift in the Indian parliamentary system.
Preparations are underway to introduce a constitutional amendment bill during the special session of Parliament scheduled for April 16, 17, and 18. Sources indicate that Prime Minister Narendra Modi may respond to the debate on this issue on April 17.
However, political disagreements regarding this proposal are surfacing. Revanth Reddy has written to the Prime Minister opposing the increase in the number of seats. He argues that such an increase, based on population, could create an imbalance for southern states, making the proposal unacceptable to them.
Opposition parties assert their support for the principle of women’s reservation but emphasize the need for extensive discussion and consensus on its implementation and seat reorganization. While the government presents this initiative as a historic step, the opposition raises questions about its various aspects. A heated debate on this issue is anticipated in the upcoming special session.
