Rajasthan Government Committed to Swift Municipal Elections, Says Minister Jhabar Singh Kharra

Jaipur, April 1: The Minister of Urban Development and Autonomous Governance, Jhabar Singh Kharra, has affirmed the Rajasthan government’s commitment to conducting municipal elections promptly. He emphasized that the government is prepared to hold these elections with the necessary legal framework in place. Kharra criticized the state Congress president for making baseless statements regarding the elections, suggesting that they should reflect on their own past actions, which he described as turning elections into a joke.

Kharra noted that the state government had completed the necessary preparations for municipal elections by September 2025 and had published the relevant notifications. He mentioned that a special appeal had been filed in the Supreme Court regarding this matter, but before a decision was reached, the High Court had already issued a ruling concerning the Nokha municipality. This ruling clarified that Section 10 of the Rajasthan Municipal Act empowers the state government to alter, reorganize, and redefine municipal boundaries. As a result, there are no obstacles to conducting elections in the 309 municipal bodies in the state.

The minister also addressed the report from the State Backward Classes Commission, stating that reservations for Other Backward Classes cannot be granted until the report is submitted. He recalled that this issue had been raised by the Congress president and other leaders in the Rajasthan Assembly. Kharra invited any political party, including Congress, to submit a written request for elections to be held without reservations for Other Backward Classes, assuring that the government would consider it. However, he noted that no such request has been made to date.

Kharra reiterated that both the State Election Commission and the State Backward Classes Commission are constitutional bodies that operate independently. He assured that the state government would act promptly to conduct elections as soon as these bodies present their decisions.
