Udaipur, March 17: Doctors at Pacific Medical College and Hospital’s Pediatric and Neonatal Surgery Department successfully performed a complex surgery on a four-month-old infant, removing a 1.5 kg tumor from his abdomen. This intricate operation involved a skilled team, including pediatric surgeon Dr. Praveen Jhankar, along with Dr. Urjita Modi, Dr. Nishant, and Dr. Suhani. The anesthesia team comprised Dr. Swati, Dr. Shahid, Dr. Aryaman, and Dr. Kiran, while the PICU team included Dr. Puneet Jain, Dr. Dhara, and Dr. Abhishek, supported by nursing staff Vishnu, Vivek, Shobhana, Manish, and Narendra.
Residing in Pratapgarh, the infant had been suffering from severe abdominal swelling and excessive crying for the past 15 days. His family consulted a local doctor, but there was no improvement. A relative suggested they take him to Pacific Hospital. Upon arrival, the child was examined by Dr. Praveen Jhankar, who ordered a CECT abdomen scan. The results revealed a gastric tumor encasing a significant portion of the stomach, measuring approximately 15 x 12 centimeters. Surgical intervention was deemed necessary.
Given the severity of the condition, Dr. Jhankar and his team promptly decided to proceed with the surgery. Performing surgery on such a young child is no small feat, but the experienced team successfully executed a partial gastrectomy, removing the tumor along with half of the stomach. Post-surgery, the child’s weight decreased to 2.6 kg, with the tumor alone weighing 1.5 kg. The excised tumor was sent for histopathological examination, confirming it as an immature mesenteric teratoma.
Dr. Praveen Jhankar noted that when the child was admitted, his total weight was only 4 kg, with the tumor accounting for a significant portion of that weight.
Following the surgery, the child’s delicate condition necessitated a transfer to the PICU, where Dr. Puneet Jain and his team closely monitored him. Thanks to excellent post-operative care and the dedication of the medical staff, the child is now fully healthy and stable, and has been discharged from the hospital. The child’s parents expressed their gratitude to the management, doctors, and nursing staff, stating that they found new hope here after being disappointed by other hospitals.
Rahul Agarwal, Chairman of PMC, congratulated the doctors on this achievement, stating that the operation is a testament to the team’s expertise and state-of-the-art medical facilities. PMC has always aimed to provide affordable and world-class treatment for even the most complex diseases at a local level. Saving the life of such a young child is a matter of pride for us.
