Kilimanjaro, Tanzania – June 28, 2025:
A devastating road accident in Tanzania’s Kilimanjaro region has claimed the lives of at least 40 people and left 28 others critically injured. The tragic incident occurred in the Sabsaba area when a passenger bus reportedly suffered a tire burst, causing it to veer out of control and collide head-on with a minibus traveling from the opposite direction.

According to local authorities, the impact of the crash was so severe that both vehicles caught fire immediately, trapping dozens of passengers inside. Rescue efforts were quickly mobilized by locals, who rushed to the scene and helped pull survivors from the burning wreckage.
Most Victims Burned Beyond Recognition
In a statement released by the President’s Office of Tanzania, it was confirmed that 36 of the 40 deceased victims were burned beyond recognition, posing challenges for identification. The bodies have been sent for forensic examination, and authorities are working to notify families.
Of the 28 injured, at least six are said to be in critical condition and are receiving treatment at a regional hospital. Several survivors have suffered severe burns and trauma.
Eyewitness Accounts & Initial Investigations
Eyewitnesses described a chaotic and horrifying scene, with flames engulfing both vehicles soon after the collision. Preliminary investigations suggest that the tire burst on the passenger bus led to loss of control, ultimately causing the fatal crash with a minibus reportedly carrying passengers en route to a wedding ceremony.
President Samia Suluhu Offers Condolences
Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy. In a post shared via the official presidential handle, she said:

“I express my deepest condolences to the bereaved families, relatives, and friends. May God give peace to the departed souls and speedy recovery to the injured.”
The President has also directed local authorities to intensify road safety checks and ensure medical assistance reaches all affected victims promptly.
Road Safety Concerns Resurface
The incident has reignited concerns about road safety and vehicle maintenance in the region, particularly the need for stricter inspections of public transport vehicles and better enforcement of highway regulations.
Tanzania has witnessed several deadly road accidents in recent years, often attributed to mechanical failures, speeding, and poor road conditions. This tragedy has once again highlighted the urgent need for systemic transport reforms and safety upgrades.
