Tragic Death of Election Officer Amid Panchayat Elections in Rajasthan

Jaipur, October 26: In the first phase of the Panchayat elections, held on Sunday across 16 districts in Rajasthan, a tragic incident occurred in the Dungarpur district. During the election process for the position of Up-Sarpanch in the Duka Gram Panchayat, Booth Level Officer (BLO) Ashok Kumar Bariya suddenly fell ill and passed away.
Reports indicate that he was being rushed for medical treatment when he succumbed. Following a post-mortem at the local hospital, his body was handed over to his family. The cause of death has not yet been determined. Bariya was a teacher at the Government Primary School in Palampur and had joined government service in 2019. He is survived by his wife and two daughters.
In Alwar district, supporters of Haradevi, a candidate for the Sarpanch position in the Garu Gram Panchayat, staged a protest demanding a recount of votes. The results announced on Saturday night declared Aarti Khandelwal as the winner, with Haradevi losing by approximately 76 votes. Haradevi’s nephew, Manoj Kumar, claimed that a bundle of ballots was found outside the school on Sunday morning, which had not been included in the count. Sub-Divisional Officer Shyam Sundar asked the villagers to submit their request for a recount in writing and assured them that appropriate action would be taken if any discrepancies were found.
In Bikaner district, following the election of Jamila as Sarpanch in the Kela Gram Panchayat, some individuals engaged in stone-pelting early Sunday morning, damaging three vehicles belonging to the police and administration. The police had to use mild force to control the situation.
In Bhilwara district, a car belonging to the son of newly elected Sarpanch Akhtari was attacked with stones, resulting in broken windows and minor injuries to his eye. Police suspect that the conflict may have arisen over the nomination of a candidate for the Up-Sarpanch position. No formal complaints have been filed yet.
Earlier, on Saturday night, in the Morija Gram Panchayat of Chomu, Jaipur district, villagers clashed with police during the counting process due to rumors of ballot box tampering.
