Is Your Aadhaar Card Being Misused? Here’s How You Can Find Out Easily

Your Aadhaar card is one of the most widely used government-issued identification documents in India. From opening bank accounts and applying for government services to buying a SIM card or checking into hotels, Aadhaar is essential. However, this wide usage also makes it vulnerable to misuse. If you’re concerned that your Aadhaar details might have been misused, there’s a simple way to track where and when your Aadhaar was used — right from the comfort of your home.

Check Aadhaar Usage History in Minutes

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) allows you to check the authentication history of your Aadhaar card. Here’s how:

  1. Visit UIDAI’s official website: https://uidai.gov.in
  2. Click on the “My Aadhaar” tab
  3. Select “Aadhaar Authentication History”
  4. Enter your 12-digit Aadhaar number and captcha code
  5. You will receive an OTP on your registered mobile number
  6. Enter the OTP to view the list of all Aadhaar authentication requests

This list will show when, where, and how your Aadhaar was used. If you see any unauthorized or unfamiliar usage, it’s a clear sign to take action.

How to Lock/Unlock Your Aadhaar for Extra Safety

To prevent misuse of your Aadhaar, UIDAI also offers the option to lock or unlock your Aadhaar biometrics:

  • Go to My Aadhaar > Aadhaar Services
  • Select “Lock/Unlock Biometrics”
  • Follow the instructions to secure your Aadhaar data

You can also download a masked Aadhaar, which hides the full 12-digit Aadhaar number, showing only the last 4 digits — a safer option when sharing photocopies.

New Aadhaar App for Secure Verification

The government has also introduced a new Aadhaar app, which allows secure and encrypted ID verification. This app can be used for offline e-KYC, reducing the risk of identity theft or unauthorized access to your information.

What to Do If You Suspect Misuse?

  • Report unauthorized use via UIDAI’s toll-free number: 1947
  • Lodge a complaint through the UIDAI Grievance Portal
  • Visit the nearest Aadhaar Enrollment Center for further assistance
