Kolkata, June 16, 2025 — A devastating fire tore through the bustling Khidirpur Market in central Kolkata in the early hours of Monday, gutting more than 1,300 shops and leaving behind smoldering ruins and shattered livelihoods. While no casualties have been reported, the scale of destruction has sent shockwaves through the city’s trading community.

According to initial reports, the blaze erupted around 1:30 AM and quickly spread across the congested lanes of the wholesale market, consuming shops and warehouses filled with flammable materials. The inferno’s intensity made firefighting extremely difficult in the initial hours.
Firefighting Operations in Full Swing
Twenty fire brigade vehicles were deployed to the site, and teams worked tirelessly throughout the morning to contain the flames. As per the West Bengal Fire Services Department, the main blaze has been brought under control. However, fire personnel are now working to identify and extinguish hidden “fire pockets”, small clusters of smoldering flames that could reignite if not neutralized completely.
An official from the Fire Services stated, “We have stopped the fire from spreading further. But before we declare the situation completely under control, our teams need to tackle these isolated pockets. Only then can the cooling process begin safely.”
Massive Losses and Questions of Accountability
The financial loss from the fire is expected to run into crores of rupees, as thousands of traders have lost their entire stock overnight. The affected market is known for wholesale trade in garments, groceries, and hardware, making it a vital economic hub for the city.
Local residents and shopkeepers have blamed administrative delays for the scale of the disaster. Many claimed that the fire tenders arrived late, and the lack of immediate action allowed the fire to spread unchecked.
“The fire station is not far, yet it took nearly an hour for fire engines to reach us,” said one local trader. “Had they acted faster, this would not have turned into such a big disaster.”
Fire Services Minister Responds
State Fire Services Minister Sujit Bose arrived at the site early in the morning and dismissed the allegations of delay and negligence. He stated that the fire brigade responded promptly and that the congested structure and illegal shop extensions made access difficult.
“We deployed 20 engines from various units. The firemen risked their lives to prevent a larger disaster. It is not right to point fingers without knowing the operational challenges on the ground,” said Bose.
Investigations Underway
Although the cause of the fire has not yet been officially confirmed, early suspicions point toward an electrical short circuit, a common hazard in older market areas with unregulated wiring. A detailed forensic and fire audit investigation has been ordered to determine the exact reason and recommend preventive measures.
Relief Measures and Next Steps
City officials have announced immediate steps to assess the damage and assist the affected traders. The Kolkata Municipal Corporation is expected to provide temporary relief and facilitate claims for insurance and aid. Local leaders have urged the state government to expedite compensation and initiate fire safety audits in all major market zones.
As the embers slowly cool, the incident has once again raised serious concerns over fire safety in crowded marketplaces, poor infrastructure, and the need for strict enforcement of building and electrical codes.
