In welcome news for pensioners, the Bihar government has made a significant announcement ahead of the upcoming state elections. Under the Social Security Pension Scheme, widowed women, senior citizens, and disabled individuals will now receive a monthly pension of ₹1,100 — more than double the previous amount of ₹400. The revised pension rates will come into effect from July 2025.

CM Nitish Kumar Announces the Hike on Social Media
Chief Minister Nitish Kumar personally shared the update via his official X (formerly Twitter) account. In his post, he wrote:
“I am happy to inform that under the Social Security Pension Scheme, widowed women, elderly and disabled people will now receive a pension of ₹1,100 per month instead of ₹400. The increased pension will be disbursed starting from July. We will ensure that this amount reaches the accounts of all beneficiaries by the 10th of each month. This will greatly benefit over 1 crore 9 lakh 69 thousand 255 beneficiaries.”
Nitish Kumar also emphasized the government’s commitment to the welfare of senior citizens, saying:
“Our elderly are a valuable part of society, and ensuring their dignified livelihood remains our priority. The state government will continue to work toward this goal.”
Pre-Election Gift for Pensioners
This announcement comes at a crucial time — just ahead of the Bihar Assembly elections — and is expected to resonate strongly with voters. The opposition has frequently criticized the government for not doing enough for the common people and underprivileged communities.
By more than doubling the pension payout, the government aims to improve the quality of life for the elderly, widows, and disabled citizens, offering much-needed financial support to these vulnerable groups.
Impact on Beneficiaries
The move will positively impact more than 1 crore 9 lakh pensioners in Bihar. The assurance of timely payment — by the 10th of every month — will further help pensioners manage their day-to-day needs more effectively.
Final Thoughts
With this bold step, the Bihar government is sending a clear message that the welfare of its citizens — especially the most vulnerable — remains a priority. For lakhs of pensioners, this revised pension amount will go a long way in providing economic relief.
