Guwahati, May 4: In a significant victory for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Pulok Gogoi has won the Tinsukia assembly seat in Assam, defeating Congress candidate David Fukan by a staggering 48,497 votes. Gogoi secured a total of 85,184 votes, while Fukan received only 36,687 votes.
The Tinsukia assembly seat, located in northeastern Assam, is politically crucial. It falls under the Dibrugarh parliamentary constituency and is classified as a general category seat. Tinsukia is known as a major commercial hub in Upper Assam, featuring a balanced mix of urban and rural voters. The region’s economy is significantly influenced by the tea, oil, and coal industries.

No single social group holds decisive power in Tinsukia. Muslim voters account for approximately 6.60%, while Scheduled Castes make up 3.25% and Scheduled Tribes 1.84%. The seat is considered urban-centric, with 51.14% of voters residing in urban areas and 48.86% in rural regions.
Historically, Tinsukia was known as Bengmara or Changmai Plateau and served as the capital of the Muttak Empire in the 18th century, developed by Swargadeo Sarbananda Singha. Today, it stands as a prominent industrial and commercial center in Assam, with its economy driven by tea plantations, oil and natural gas production, coal mining, tea processing, and small businesses.
