New Delhi, March 2: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced an upcoming Test and ODI series between India and Afghanistan. While the two teams frequently compete in T20 matches, this series will mark a significant step up in their rivalry.
The Afghanistan cricket team is set to visit India in June 2026 for one Test and three One Day Internationals (ODIs).
The sole Test match will take place from June 6 to June 10, 2026, in New Chandigarh.
The ODI series will kick off with the first match on June 14 in Dharamshala, followed by the second match on June 17 in Lucknow, and concluding with the third match on June 20 in Chennai. All ODIs will start at 1:30 PM.
Historically, India and Afghanistan have played only one Test match, which occurred in Bengaluru in 2018. India won that match by an innings and 262 runs, with Shikhar Dhawan earning the Player of the Match award for his score of 107 runs. Ajinkya Rahane captained the Indian team during that game.
The two teams have faced off in four ODIs to date, with India winning three of those encounters. The last ODI was played on October 11, 2023, and one match ended in a tie.
Afghanistan’s performance in the 2026 T20 World Cup was disappointing, as they failed to reach the Super 8 stage after having previously reached the semifinals. Following this setback, the team has appointed Richard Pybus as their new coach, replacing Jonathan Trott. The cricketing world will be watching closely to see how Afghanistan rebounds from their recent struggles, and the upcoming tour to India is expected to provide a valuable opportunity for the team.
