Udaipur, April 23:
This year’s Earth Day theme is “Our Planet – Our Power.” However, the Earth should not be viewed merely as a planet but as “Mother Earth.” This perspective fosters a sense of service and reverence, ensuring that our planet remains healthy, prosperous, and joyful. It empowers us.
These thoughts were shared by Dr. Anil Mehta, Principal of Vidya Bhawan Polytechnic and an advocate for environmental protection, during a national webinar organized by the India Scouts and Guides on Earth Day.
Dr. Mehta emphasized that when we regard the Earth as our mother, it naturally cultivates sensitivity, gratitude, and a commitment to its preservation.
He pointed out that reckless development and greed have left 75% of the Earth in a deteriorated state. The world is heading towards a water crisis, with continuous degradation of natural resources such as lakes, rivers, mountains, seas, and forests. On average, for every rupee spent on nature conservation, thirty times that amount is spent on activities that harm it.
Referencing the Prime Minister’s “Mission Life,” which promotes a lifestyle for the environment, Mehta stressed the need to shift from “mindless consumption” to “mindful and responsible use.” He called for balanced and environmentally friendly practices in personal, professional, and public life.
Discussing a green lifestyle, Mehta recommended adopting measures such as living a plastic-free life, reducing food waste, embracing a chemical-free lifestyle, practicing minimal and thoughtful consumption, and recycling. He highlighted that significant amounts of water are used in the production of our daily food and clothing, urging people to adopt habits like “Save Food – Save Water” and “Buy Less – Wear More.”
On this occasion, youth and teenagers from across the country pledged to incorporate green habits into their lives.
The program commenced with Dr. Darshana Pawaskar, National Director of India Scouts and Guides, providing insights into the objectives of Earth Day.
