Mumbai, June 18: Political activity is ramping up as the Monsoon Session approaches, with efforts to bolster the strength in the Lok Sabha. Following West Bengal and Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu’s DMK is now seen as the next target for political maneuvering. Sources indicate that the central government’s strategy aims to approach a two-thirds majority in the Lok Sabha. This would facilitate significant constitutional changes, including delimitation, the implementation of women’s reservation, and the ‘One Nation, One Election’ initiative.
Reports suggest that after failing to secure necessary support for key bills, including delimitation, in the previous session, the government has initiated a strategy to increase its numbers. Political corridors are abuzz with speculation that some MPs from TMC and the Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray faction of Shiv Sena may switch allegiances. If this occurs, it could increase the NDA’s strength in the Lok Sabha. However, additional support from more MPs will still be required to achieve a two-thirds majority.
Sources reveal that if the government nears a two-thirds majority, a special session of Parliament could be convened to advance the delimitation bill. Discussions are underway to potentially increase the number of Lok Sabha seats to 850. Additionally, there are prospects for constitutional advancements on women’s reservation and the ‘One Nation, One Election’ agenda.
Speculation of Rebellion Among Shiv Sena UBT MPs
In the meantime, Shiv Sena UBT has issued a whip to all its Lok Sabha MPs, mandating their attendance at a parliamentary party meeting scheduled for Thursday. A circular released by the party on June 16 emphasizes the importance of this meeting to discuss various organizational and political issues. The meeting will take place at 11 AM at the parliamentary party office in the Parliament House.
This development comes amid discussions of rebellion among six of the nine Shiv Sena UBT MPs. According to sources, these six MPs sent a letter to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla at 9:30 AM on Wednesday, expressing their intent to merge with the Shinde faction. However, there has been no official confirmation from the Lok Sabha Speaker or the alleged rebel faction.
The MPs reportedly involved in this speculation include Nagesh Patil Ashtikar and Sanjay Dina Patil. However, Sanjay Dina Patil denied the rumors of leaving the party on Wednesday morning. Meanwhile, Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Raut addressed the media in Delhi, delivering a sharp response to the rebel MPs. He later clarified that certain words used in Marathi are part of everyday conversation.
During Raut’s press conference, only three of the nine Shiv Sena UBT MPs—Anil Desai, Rajabhau Waje, and Arvind Sawant—were present. Raut stated that the remaining MPs should come forward to refute the speculation. If this split occurs, it would mark the second significant political fracture within Shiv Sena in four years, following a rebellion led by Eknath Shinde in June 2022, when 39 MLAs formed a separate faction.
