New Delhi, September 6: The Congress party has announced significant organizational changes, appointing former Rajasthan Deputy Chief Minister and National General Secretary Sachin Pilot as the AICC in-charge of Punjab. Former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel, who previously managed Punjab, has now been assigned to Assam. This announcement was made by Congress General Secretary K.C. Venugopal.
These changes come at a crucial time as the Punjab Congress faces internal strife while gearing up for the upcoming assembly elections. The party leadership is tasked with uniting the state organization and formulating an effective electoral strategy.
Pilot’s Major Challenge in Punjab: Ending Factionalism
In Punjab, Sachin Pilot will confront the pressing issue of factionalism, particularly between state president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring and former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi. Disagreements have surfaced regarding ticket distribution and organizational decisions, leading to public statements from various leaders.
Pilot’s primary responsibility will be to foster coordination among the different factions and unify the party ahead of the assembly elections scheduled for 2027. This decision by the Congress high command is seen as a strategic move to prepare for the elections.
Sukhdev Bagat Takes Over Chhattisgarh
Following Pilot’s move to Punjab, Sukhdev Bagat has been appointed as the in-charge of Chhattisgarh. Meanwhile, Bhupesh Baghel has been reassigned from Punjab to Assam.
Additionally, the Congress has made organizational changes in other states. Dr. Sirivella Prasad has been given responsibility for Maharashtra, and P.V. Mohan will oversee Andhra Pradesh.
Changes in Gujarat
The Congress has also restructured its leadership in Gujarat. Mukul Wasnik has been relieved of his duties, with Randeep Singh Surjewala taking over. Surjewala is a prominent national leader and has previously been associated with the Karnataka organization. This change is considered significant in light of upcoming electoral and organizational dynamics.
New Experiment in Punjab Before Elections
Sachin Pilot’s appointment as in-charge of Punjab is politically significant. He has been active in the national organization for a long time, in addition to serving as the state Congress president and deputy chief minister in Rajasthan. His previous role was overseeing Chhattisgarh, where he was listed on the official Congress website before the reshuffle.
His appointment is viewed as an effort by the high command to balance the organization and bring various leaders together ahead of the elections.
Bhupesh Baghel Assigned to Assam
Bhupesh Baghel, removed from Punjab, has now been appointed as the in-charge of Assam Congress. Following poor performance in the assembly elections, there was a felt need for organizational changes. The previous in-charge of Assam, Jitendra Singh, resigned on May 4, 2026, taking responsibility for the electoral defeat. Thus, it would not be accurate to say he was “removed” in this reshuffle, as his resignation had occurred months prior.
Changes Across Six States
The Congress’s organizational reshuffle primarily affects states like Punjab, Assam, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, and Gujarat. The most political discourse surrounds Sachin Pilot’s new role in Punjab, as the Congress must resolve internal conflicts and devise a robust electoral strategy against the BJP, Aam Aadmi Party, and Shiromani Akali Dal ahead of the next assembly elections.
Following Pilot’s appointment, attention will be on how he establishes coordination among the various factions within Punjab Congress and how effectively he can unify the organization before the elections.
