Allegations of Government Misuse Ahead of Panchayat Elections in Rajasthan

Jaipur, September 30: Political tensions are escalating in Rajasthan as the opposition leader, Tika Ram Jully, accuses the government of misusing official machinery ahead of the upcoming Panchayat elections. Jully, who leads the opposition in the state assembly, claims that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government, led by Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma, is gathering information about potential candidates for district heads, village heads, district council members, and Panchayat committee members before the election schedule is officially announced.

Jully supports his claims by sharing a purported letter on social media, questioning why the government is collecting details about potential candidates. He stated, “The BJP government, rattled by the recent urban local body elections, is now attempting to compile a list of potential candidates using government resources. Chief Minister, the elections haven’t even begun, and are you already afraid of losing?”

He emphasized that gathering political information about potential candidates is not a routine administrative task for government departments. Jully expressed concerns that such lists could be used to exert pressure on individuals, issue notices, or carry out other administrative actions.

Furthermore, he questioned which official in the Chief Minister’s office is directing the collection of this information.

In his post, Jully referenced the recent urban local body elections, alleging that the police and administrative machinery were misused in favor of the ruling party during that period. The Congress party has also submitted a memorandum to the State Election Commission, demanding an investigation into the alleged governmental pressure and the role of officials during the elections.

Jully stated that Congress will file a complaint with the State Election Commission regarding this matter and will seek an investigation into the entire process of requesting information about potential candidates.

The results of the urban local body elections revealed that the BJP emerged as the largest party among the 309 local bodies, winning 4,182 out of 10,244 wards. However, this figure does not constitute a majority. Independent candidates also performed notably well.

The data from these elections are fueling claims from both sides—the BJP views it as a victory, while Congress interprets it as a mandate against the government.

As of now, the official dates for the Panchayat elections in Rajasthan have not been announced. The Rajasthan High Court has set a deadline for completing the entire local body election process by November 15, 2026, and the state government has assured the court of compliance. The State Election Commission is currently working on the electoral schedule.

In the meantime, the State Election Commission has issued new guidelines regarding polling agents for the Panchayat elections. Under these guidelines, government employees, public sector officials, local body members, and individuals receiving remuneration from the government will not be allowed to serve as polling agents. Violating these rules could result in imprisonment for up to three months, fines, or both. The commission has stated that this measure aims to ensure equal opportunities for all candidates and parties.
