Political Tensions Rise in Alwar After Gandhi Jayanti Event

Alwar, October 3: Political discussions have intensified in Alwar following an incident during the Gandhi Jayanti celebration, just ten days after the election of a new mayor. Sanjay Sharma, the State Minister for Forest, Environment, and Climate Change, visited the municipal corporation on Friday morning to pay tribute to Mahatma Gandhi. However, both the mayor and the municipal commissioner were notably absent during his visit.

After the tribute, Ajay Agarwal, the husband of Mayor Sumanlata Agarwal and a former chairman, attempted to stop the minister’s vehicle by calling out to his personal secretary, but the car drove away.

Solo Tribute

On Friday, Sanjay Sharma arrived at the municipal corporation, where a program honoring sanitation workers was also taking place. The mayor and commissioner were reportedly present at this event. The minister went directly to the statue of Mahatma Gandhi to pay his respects. He also offered flowers at portraits of Gandhi and former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri before leaving in his vehicle.

Notably, the newly elected Deputy Mayor, Ajay Poonia, was also absent from the event.

No Signs of Discontent

Ajay Agarwal later denied any feelings of discontent regarding the minister’s early departure. He expressed uncertainty about why the minister left abruptly, suggesting he might have had another engagement. Sanjay Sharma has not publicly confirmed any dissatisfaction regarding the incident.

Discussion on Protocol

Political and administrative circles have been abuzz with discussions about the expected protocol during the minister’s visit. Many believe that the mayor and senior officials should have been present to welcome him. However, the specific protocol for the event has not been disclosed.

First Board Formed Just Days Ago

Sumanlata Agarwal was elected as the mayor of Alwar on September 21, receiving 42 out of 65 votes. This marks the first board formed since the establishment of the Alwar municipal corporation. Prior to the elections, the BJP had 28 councilors, while the Congress had 23, with 13 independent candidates. A total of 33 votes were needed for a majority, meaning the BJP candidate received 14 more votes than their own party’s count.

Pending Recruitment of Sanitation Workers

This incident is also linked to an ongoing dispute regarding the recruitment of sanitation workers in the corporation. Sanjay Sharma had previously staged a protest in August over this issue, claiming that despite the completion of the recruitment process, eligible workers were not being appointed.

The matter pertains to the 2012 recruitment of sanitation workers. In August, five candidates received appointment letters, and a committee was formed to verify the documents of the remaining candidates, assuring them of appointments if deemed eligible. Reports now indicate that around 30 sanitation workers have yet to complete the joining process despite receiving their appointment letters.
