CJP Spokespersons Detained Amid Protests as Jantar Mantar Removed from Designated Sites

New Delhi, October 13: The Delhi Police detained Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka, spokespersons for the Cockroach People’s Party (CJP), along with their supporters during a protest at Jantar Mantar. The police took action as the group was chanting slogans on Tuesday.

This incident occurred shortly after Jantar Mantar was removed from the list of designated protest sites in Delhi, a change implemented earlier this week.

In Brief:
– What Happened: CJP spokespersons and supporters were detained by the Delhi Police at Jantar Mantar.
– Who: Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka.
– Background: Jantar Mantar is no longer on the designated protest sites list.
– Order Issued By: The Delhi Police Commissioner, based on recommendations from a Home Ministry committee.
– New Sites: Ramleela Maidan, Burari Ground, and CBD Ground.
– Demands: Resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and opposition to the Special Intensive Review (SIR).

Jantar Mantar No Longer a Protest Site

The order to remove Jantar Mantar from the designated protest sites was issued by the Delhi Police Commissioner on October 11 and became public on October 12. According to the police, this decision was made based on recommendations from a committee formed by the Home Ministry, which was tasked with suggesting alternative protest locations.

The order designates three locations for protests: Ramleela Maidan, Burari Ground, and CBD Ground. This decision partially amends an earlier order from April 28, 2022. Detailed procedures for protests at these new sites will be released separately.

It is important to note that this order is from the Delhi Police and is said to be based on the recommendations of the Home Ministry’s committee.

Second Detention in Three Days

Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka have been detained previously. They were released after 23 hours of detention when they were stopped at the airport while heading to Delhi to protest against the Chief Election Commissioner. That detention was precautionary.

A special executive magistrate in Delhi’s southwest district ordered their release. The Supreme Court held a special session on Sunday to hear this matter.

What Are Their Demands?

The Cockroach People’s Party is demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and opposing the Special Intensive Review (SIR) of the voter list. The organization had called for a protest at Jantar Mantar on October 10.
