Amit Shah Criticizes Rahul Gandhi Amid Opposition Protests Over Voter List Revisions

New Delhi, October 14: Union Home Minister Amit Shah has launched a direct attack on Rahul Gandhi amid ongoing opposition protests regarding the Special Intensive Review (SIR) of the voter list and the Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Shah urged the Congress party to introspect on the reasons behind its electoral defeats, predicting that the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) will secure a significant majority in the 2029 Lok Sabha elections, while Congress will face its fourth consecutive loss.

The opposition, led by Rahul Gandhi, has raised questions about the SIR process and is demanding the resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner. On Monday, leaders from the INDIA alliance marched to the Supreme Court to file a petition, and a meeting of opposition leaders took place at Rahul Gandhi’s residence on Tuesday.

“A Crowd of 8,000 Workers Is Not the Voice of the Country”

Shah emphasized that fabricated media events and “echoes of lies” cannot win the trust of the public. He stated that gathering 8,000 workers from fourteen parties within a one-and-a-half-kilometer radius does not represent the voice of the nation. According to him, the true voice of the country resides in the fields, villages, remote mountains, forests, and riverbanks, areas where Congress has limited reach.

He pointed out that in states like Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu, the public has consistently rejected Congress for decades.

Referencing By-Elections and Gujarat Results

Shah noted that Congress failed to win any seats in the recent by-elections in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, and Puducherry. He highlighted that in Nandigram, the BJP candidate won with 76% of the vote, and in Reginagar, the BJP secured a seat with a margin of over 75,000 votes. In Puducherry, the ally AINRC candidate won by 8,482 votes, while Congress managed only 22% of the votes. He mentioned that in a significant state where Congress once governed, it has not won an election in 41 years.

Citing local body elections in Gujarat, Shah stated that the BJP won 90 out of 104 seats and claimed 38 out of 44 seats in the Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation. He also referred to the Gram Panchayat elections in Tripura, where the NDA won over 4,000 seats, conducted via ballot paper. Shah questioned whether Congress’s defeat in Gujarat could also be attributed to the SIR.

Mentioning Rajasthan

Shah expressed gratitude on behalf of the BJP to the people of Tripura, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Bengal, and Assam, stating that despite misinformation, the public has endorsed Narendra Modi, the BJP, and the NDA. In Rajasthan’s September local elections, the BJP secured mayorships in nine out of ten municipal corporations.

“A Strategy to Protect Intruders”

Shah claimed that the public has recognized the strategy to protect intruders under the guise of SIR and that such tactics will no longer work. He reiterated that the NDA is poised for a significant majority in the 2029 general elections, while Congress will face another defeat.

Congress Responds

In response, Rahul Gandhi stated that the opposition’s political resistance against alleged electoral irregularities will continue. Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi argued that the party’s past electoral losses do not address current concerns regarding the SIR process and the impact of removing names from the voter list just before elections. Earlier, Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud had refused to meet with opposition leaders, asserting that the doors of the court are open to all citizens.
