Jaipur, October 15: BJP state president Madan Rathore has responded sharply to former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot‘s recent statements. Rathore accused Gehlot of displaying a desire for power and frustration, claiming that his remarks on redistricting contradict decisions made during his own tenure.
Rathore stated that Gehlot frequently questions the BJP regarding internal rebellions in Rajasthan, despite having previously projected unity with those who rebelled, often seen riding bikes together or posing for photos with party leadership.
“He should clarify whether he stands with Sachin Pilot or continues to treat him as a subordinate,” Rathore remarked.
This comment alludes to the open conflict between Gehlot and Pilot factions within the Rajasthan Congress that surfaced in 2022.
On Redistricting: ‘Remember Your Past Decisions’
Rathore emphasized that Gehlot seems to forget how he managed redistricting of urban bodies during his chief ministership. He alleged that Gehlot created multiple municipal corporations in cities to prevent BJP victories and manipulated ward numbers to limit BJP’s traditional strongholds.
He criticized the Congress party for attempting to shift blame for its failures to redistricting, noting that it has been out of power in several states for decades. Rathore highlighted that the BJP has built public trust while in opposition and has worked to meet the expectations of the electorate upon returning to power.
Gehlot has consistently raised questions regarding redistricting. In April, he warned the central government to take the South’s concerns seriously, or risk repeating the turmoil of the 1960s. In September, he suggested that there are plans to increase the number of Lok Sabha seats through redistricting.
On Women’s Reservation and Supreme Court Matters
Regarding women’s reservation, Rathore claimed that Gehlot lacks complete information. He referred to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call for the bill to be passed unanimously and urged Gehlot not to obstruct the empowerment of half the country’s population.
On the topic of approaching the Supreme Court, Rathore stated that every institution has its own structure and norms, and neglecting these weakens the democratic framework. He accused Congress of disregarding both the public mandate and constitutional provisions.
On Agreements with China
Rathore also addressed Gehlot’s references to China, urging him to disclose the specifics of any agreements made by Congress with the Chinese government and who signed them. He insisted that, as a senior leader, Gehlot should make this Memorandum of Understanding public.
This refers to an agreement made between Congress and the Chinese Communist Party in 2008, which was brought up in a public interest petition in the Supreme Court in 2020. The court, led by then Chief Justice S.A. Bobde, stated it had never heard of a political party entering into an agreement with a foreign entity. However, the court declined to hear the petition and directed the petitioners to approach the High Court without making any determinations on the merits of the case.
