New Delhi, October 15: Ritu Barala, the National Secretary of the NSUI, has made serious allegations following a protest in Delhi demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. During the demonstration, a confrontation occurred between Ritu and a female police officer on a bus, which has since sparked significant controversy after a video of the incident surfaced.
On Wednesday, Ritu detailed the incident during a press conference alongside Rahul Gandhi. He referred to her as a ‘lioness’ and, when asked if she felt scared, Ritu confidently replied that she did not.
“I said, hit me as much as you want. We were peacefully protesting, but we were packed into buses,” Ritu stated.
Ritu recounted that while attempting to exit the bus, a female police officer allegedly choked her, pushed her from behind, causing her to fall, and struck her. She claimed that her hair was pulled, and she suffered injuries to her ear.
Additionally, Ritu accused the police of dragging her and a fellow protester onto the street at Connaught Place and physically assaulting them. She reported that after being taken to the police station, officers questioned her about Rahul Gandhi’s whereabouts while striking her on the legs with a baton. Ritu responded, “No one, ma’am. We will meet again at the next protest.”
The video from the bus shows the altercation escalating into a physical struggle, with both Ritu and the police officer pulling each other’s hair. Other protesters and male police officers were also present, and intervention occurred shortly thereafter.
Congress leaders have expressed their outrage, accusing the Delhi police of assaulting and mistreating NSUI activists. The organization staged a sit-in outside the Connaught Place police station in protest. As of now, there has been no official response from the Delhi police regarding these allegations.
