Congress Protest Near PM Residence Ends in Police Action

New Delhi, July 21: Congress leaders staged a protest near the Prime Minister’s residence for three hours, demanding accountability over a recent paper leak scandal. Despite two rounds of discussions with the government, no agreement was reached, leading to a confrontation between police and demonstrators.

On Tuesday afternoon, prominent leaders including Rahul Gandhi, Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, and Samajwadi Party President Akhilesh Yadav were detained by Delhi police. They were removed from the protest site in police vehicles.

The Congress leaders began their demonstration around 3:30 PM, calling for the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and the Prime Minister. The protest lasted until approximately 6:30 PM when police initiated their removal.

During the protest, the government attempted to negotiate with Rahul Gandhi and other opposition leaders twice, urging them to end the demonstration. However, the Congress leaders remained firm in their demands.

The Congress party argued that the paper leak has jeopardized the futures of millions of students and insisted that mere administrative action is insufficient. They called for political accountability and clear decisions regarding students’ demands.

After negotiations failed, over 100 police personnel arrived at the protest site. As police moved to detain Rahul Gandhi, Congress leaders and supporters formed a human chain around him in an effort to block the police.

For about half an hour, there was a scuffle between police officers and protesters. Congress leaders accused the police of using excessive force and baton charges. The police have yet to provide an official response to these allegations.

Rahul Gandhi refused to leave the protest site voluntarily, prompting more than a dozen police officers to carry him to a police bus. Priyanka Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, Akhilesh Yadav, and other opposition leaders were also taken into custody.

Supporters of the detained leaders chanted slogans against the central government and police. The police increased security around the Prime Minister’s residence and surrounding sensitive areas while clearing the protesters.

The Congress party condemned the police action as a violation of democratic rights and stated that their movement regarding the paper leak and student issues would continue.
