Controversy Erupts as Over 70 Photos Removed from Rehan Vadras Exhibition

New Delhi, October 22: In a surprising turn of events, over 70 photographs have been removed from photographer Rehan Vadra’s exhibition at Bikaner House. This venue, owned by the Rajasthan government, has now become a focal point of political debate. Former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has labeled the removal as an attack on artistic expression and a clear case of censorship. Meanwhile, Rehan’s mother and Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra expressed her pride in her son amidst the controversy.
The exhibition originally featured a total of 105 photographs. However, the management of Bikaner House raised objections regarding the “political nature” of the displayed works, demanding the removal of 75 images or face cancellation of the exhibition. Currently, only about 40 photographs remain on display, leaving many spaces empty. The removed images reportedly included scenes from protests at Jantar Mantar, recent movements in Delhi, and various street visuals.
Rehan Vadra stated that the complete layout of the exhibition had been shared with the management beforehand, making the last-minute removal of photos unjustifiable. He noted that one image featuring the national flag was also taken down, but he reinstated it. Gehlot mentioned that two images with the national flag were requested to be removed, to which Rehan firmly refused.
Gehlot criticized the Rajasthan government, asserting that the BJP administration is suppressing a young artist’s creative expression. He emphasized that many of the removed images depicted youth movements in Delhi, which the BJP fears as they reveal uncomfortable truths. “Silencing artists is a direct assault on democracy. This is a clear example of censorship. The BJP government must explain why these truth-revealing images were removed,” Gehlot stated.
He praised Rehan’s refusal to compromise on the images featuring the national flag, highlighting the importance of respecting national symbols.
In a show of support, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra took to social media to express her pride in her son. She stated, “When someone in power becomes afraid of another’s expression, they fail to realize that the strength they seek to protect is already lost.” She encouraged Rehan to stand firm with the truth, assuring him of her unwavering pride.
As of now, neither Bikaner House nor the Rajasthan government has issued an official statement regarding the removal of the photographs. Bikaner House has been a significant venue for the Rajasthan government’s events since its acquisition post-independence.
