Washington, April 12, 2025 — In a ruling that has sparked national controversy, a U.S. immigration court has upheld the deportation of Columbia University graduate student Mahmoud Khalil, following arguments by the Trump administration that his political views pose a threat to national security. The decision was delivered on Friday by Immigration Judge Jamie Commons in Louisiana.

Court Sides with Administration on Security Grounds
The ruling allows federal immigration authorities to move forward with Khalil’s deportation, potentially as early as April 23. Judge Commons supported the administration’s assertion that Khalil’s pro-Palestinian activism constituted grounds for removal under national security statutes.
Khalil, a 30-year-old legal resident, was arrested last month, an event that sparked widespread protests across university campuses and civil rights communities. The judge’s decision follows a growing pattern of scrutiny toward foreign nationals engaged in political activism.
Temporary Block Remains in Place
Despite Friday’s decision, Khalil’s deportation remains temporarily paused under a separate stay order issued by a federal judge in New Jersey. That order, effective until April 23, prevents immediate removal and gives his legal team time to file appeals.
Khalil’s attorney, Mark Van Der Hout, said the legal battle is far from over.
“This case is about fundamental rights — free speech and due process. We will continue to challenge this decision in every legal forum available.”
Backlash from Civil Liberties Advocates
The court’s decision has triggered outcry from civil rights groups and academic institutions, who argue that Khalil is being targeted for his political beliefs rather than any criminal action. Supporters emphasize that Khalil was legally residing in the United States and had committed no known offenses.
Protests have intensified at Columbia University and other campuses nationwide, with students and faculty expressing concern over the implications of deporting someone based on ideological expression.
The case is now expected to move into the federal appeals process, where broader questions around free speech protections and national security assessments may come into focus.
