Tonk, June 15: The issue of releasing water from the Panchna Dam into the command area canals has reignited in Tonk district. On Monday, a large group of community members and farmers, led by the Rajasthan Tribal Meena Seva Sangh, gathered at the Tonk district collectorate to protest and submit a memorandum to the Chief Minister. The demonstrators demanded immediate compliance with the High Court’s orders to release water into the canals of the command area.
In the memorandum presented under the leadership of district president Shivjeelal Meena, it was stated that the problems faced by farmers in the command area linked to the Panchna Dam should not be delayed any further. The memorandum accused the previous government of halting a system in 2006, which has yet to be effectively restored, leaving thousands of farmers facing irrigation and drinking water crises.
Protesters noted that a public interest petition had been filed by farmers in the command area, to which the Rajasthan High Court had issued clear directives to the state government on May 1, 2026, to release water into the canals. They claimed that despite the court’s orders, water has not yet been released, resulting in significant losses for the farmers.
The Rajasthan Tribal Meena Seva Sangh emphasized that the primary demand of farmers from all communities in the command area is to immediately release water in compliance with the court’s orders and to restore their legal rights. The Sangh warned that if action is not taken soon, the movement will be escalated.
The memorandum also highlighted that land was acquired from local farmers for the Panchna Dam project, thus giving displaced farmers and residents of the command area a primary right to water. Protesters urged the government to make decisions in accordance with the court’s orders and displacement regulations, without neglecting the interests of farmers.
Furthermore, the Sangh warned that if farmers’ demands continue to be ignored, a larger movement could be initiated regarding the water supply from the Bisalpur Dam to Jaipur and Ajmer.
The protest and memorandum event saw participation from district president Shivjeelal Meena, along with Sukhlal Meena, former sarpanch Mahaveer Meena, Kanhaiyalal Meena, Ghanshyam, Ramlal Meena, Ramkaran Meena, Tulsiram Meena, Hanuman, Bhartlal, Kamlesh, B.L. Meena, Motilal, and many other farmers and community members.
