Gang Behind Rs 70 Crore Counterfeit Coins Busted in Saharanpur

Saharanpur police arrest Mithilesh Chaurasiya, a key figure in a counterfeit coin gang worth Rs 70 crore.

The Saharanpur police, in collaboration with the Madhubani police, have arrested a key member of an interstate gang involved in producing and distributing counterfeit coins valued at approximately Rs 70 crore. The accused, Mithilesh Chaurasiya, was apprehended during a raid on Thursday evening in his hometown of Laddugav.

Mithilesh’s arrest follows the earlier apprehension of five gang members, including the leader Upkar Luthra, on September 12. The Saharanpur police have registered a case at the Saharanpur Nagar police station concerning the counterfeit coin operation.

According to Station House Officer Satyendra Kumar of Rajnagar police station, the recent investigation revealed Mithilesh’s involvement with the gang. Following this, a police team led by Sub-Inspector Iqbal Singh Tomar conducted a raid in Laddugav, resulting in Mithilesh’s capture.

Seizures Made During the Raid

During previous actions against the gang, authorities recovered 6,400 ready coins worth Rs 1.28 lakh and approximately 4.5 lakh rupees worth of semi-finished coins. Additionally, six coin-making machines, several dies, an electronic scale, and various other suspicious items were seized.

Gang’s Operations and Cost

According to the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), the gang produced between 10,000 to 12,000 coins daily using six machines, with each coin costing around Rs 5 to Rs 6 to manufacture. Instead of selling the coins directly in the market, they were distributed through agents, who purchased the counterfeit coins at Rs 12 to Rs 15 each and then sold them to various shops and establishments, particularly targeting liquor outlets.

Community Reaction and Background of the Accused

The arrest of Mithilesh Chaurasiya has surprised local residents, as he had reportedly served as a prominent representative in Rajnagar for nearly five years. Additionally, he was known for his involvement in several Maithili songs, leading to various discussions within the community regarding his arrest.
