Shimla, March 30: Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhu announced the launch of the “Chief Minister Sukhu Family Scheme” during the presentation of the 2026-27 budget. This initiative aims to provide free electricity of up to 300 units per month to one lakh underprivileged families in the state. Additionally, eligible families will be identified for phased assistance in securing permanent housing. The Chief Minister also revealed that women from these families will receive financial support of ₹1,500 per month under the Indira Gandhi Sukha Samman Nidhi Scheme.
During a budget speech lasting approximately 4 hours and 16 minutes, CM Sukhu presented a budget of ₹54,928 crore for 2026-27, which is ₹3,586 crore less than the previous fiscal year. He noted that the cessation of the RDG (Revenue Deficit Grant) by the central government has resulted in an annual loss of ₹8,105 crore for the state, necessitating a reduction in the budget size. Despite these challenges, he assured that developmental activities would not be adversely affected.
In light of financial constraints, the Chief Minister announced a temporary deferment of salaries: 50% for himself, 30% for the Deputy CM and ministers, and 20% for legislators over the next six months. Salaries for senior administrative and police officials, along with Class-One officers, will also be temporarily deferred.
Furthermore, the government has announced an increase in the honorarium for approximately 70,000 temporary employees, ranging from ₹300 to ₹1,000. Contract employees will now be regularized twice a year instead of once. The minimum wage has also been raised by ₹50 to ₹750, providing relief to the working class.
