Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh – June 26, 2025:
A devastating natural disaster has struck Himachal Pradesh once again. In a chilling reminder of the force of nature, 15 to 20 laborers are feared missing after a flash flood swept through a ravine near a hydro project in the Kangra district on Wednesday afternoon. This tragedy follows closely on the heels of widespread destruction caused by monsoon-induced cloudbursts across the Kullu district.

Deadly Flash Flood Near Dharamshala Hydro Project
The incident occurred at the Indira Priyadarshini Hydraulic Project in Sokni Da Kot (Khaniara) near Dharamshala, where laborers were residing in temporary shelters on the banks of the Manuni ravine. Eyewitnesses say the water level surged around 1:00 PM, despite relatively clear weather, leaving the workers no time to react.
One of the survivors, Dharmendra, a welder from Chamba, recounted the harrowing moment the floodwaters tore through the site. Another survivor, Parvez Mohammad, said he witnessed a body being swept away and also reported that a vehicle was lost in the current.
Administration Launches Rescue Operation
BJP MLA Sudhir Sharma, who represents Dharamshala, confirmed the incident and described it as “extremely sad and painful.” He expressed solidarity with the affected families via a heartfelt post on social media.
Search and rescue operations are now in full swing, led by the Kangra district administration with support from SDRF and local teams. So far, two bodies have been recovered, confirmed Hans Raj, MLA from Churah (Chamba).
Monsoon Mayhem in Kullu: Four Cloudbursts Reported
Before this tragedy in Kangra, Kullu district also experienced severe monsoon havoc on Wednesday. Four cloudbursts were reported across Sainj, Banjar, Manali, and Manikaran Valley, causing rivers and mountain streams to overflow and wreaking havoc across the region.
In Sainj, a family’s home was swept away, tragically killing a father, daughter, and another woman. Fortunately, the girl’s mother and brother narrowly escaped. In Manali, a flash flood was reported near Anjani Mahadev, and the Beas River swelled dangerously. A portion of the National Highway near Wahang was damaged, leaving only one lane functional.
Torrential Rain and Weather Alert
Heavy rainfall was recorded across the region:
-
145.4 mm in Palampur
-
113 mm in Jogindernagar
-
94 mm in Nahan
-
85 mm in Baijnath
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for the next seven days, urging residents to remain cautious and avoid riverbanks or landslide-prone zones.
National Leaders React
JP Nadda, National President of the Bharatiya Janata Party, expressed deep grief over the incident. “It is heartbreaking to hear the news of workers being swept away in Khaniyara,” he wrote, assuring full support and assistance from BJP workers during this crisis.
This tragedy has once again highlighted the vulnerability of hilly regions during monsoon season, and the urgent need for better early warning systems and disaster preparedness. As rescue teams race against time, the entire state mourns the loss and prays for the missing.
Stay tuned for updates as we continue to track the rescue efforts and the broader monsoon impact across Himachal Pradesh.
