Srinagar, May 8, 2025 Despite making diplomatic appeals on the global stage following INDIA’s retaliatory airstrikes under Operation Sindoor, Pakistan continues to violate the ceasefire along the Line of Control (LoC) and the International Border in Jammu and Kashmir. Early Thursday morning, Pakistani forces resorted to unprovoked firing and shelling in Kupwara, Baramulla, Uri, and Akhnoor sectors, escalating regional tensions yet again.

Post-Operation Sindoor Escalation
According to military officials, the Pakistani army targeted Indian forward posts and civilian areas using small arms and heavy artillery without provocation. The attacks began late Wednesday night and continued into early Thursday. Indian forces gave a “befitting and proportionate response”, ensuring that civilian casualties were avoided.
Officials confirmed that mortar shells were fired into civilian areas of Karnah in the Kupwara district. Most residents in the region had already taken refuge in safer locations following the high-alert status after Operation Sindoor, India’s pre-dawn surgical strike on May 7 that neutralized multiple terror hubs across Pakistan and PoK.
Emergency Measures and Institutional Closures
In response to the heightened threat level:
-
Educational institutions in five border districts of Jammu—Jammu, Samba, Kathua, Rajouri, and Poonch—remained closed.
-
All scheduled university and school examinations were postponed, including at Jammu University, Cluster University, IIM Jammu, and IIT Jammu.
-
Kashmir University announced the suspension of all exams until May 10, citing safety concerns.
To coordinate emergency responses, control rooms have been established in 10 districts across Kashmir, including Srinagar, Baramulla, Kupwara, and Gurez. A centralized command center is also functioning from the Srinagar Deputy Commissioner’s office, under the supervision of the District Disaster Management Authority.
Tense but Prepared: Security Agencies on Alert
The repeated ceasefire violations by Pakistan come in the wake of India’s decisive military action following the Pahalgam terror attack, in which 26 Indian civilians were killed. The Indian military has since remained on high alert, with surveillance intensified across LoC sectors and key installations.
There have been no reported casualties so far from the renewed shelling, though the psychological impact and disruption to civilian life remains significant.
