Jaipur, April 14: On the occasion of Ambedkar Jayanti, Sachin Pilot, Congress’s Chhattisgarh in-charge and MLA, launched a strong critique against both the central and state governments regarding the Constitution and the current political climate. He emphasized that Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s contributions to the nation are unparalleled, and the Constitution he provided remains highly relevant today. Pilot stated that it is more crucial than ever to uphold the fundamental spirit of the Constitution, as its provisions are often overlooked and disrespected.
Pilot asserted that merely paying lip service to the Constitution is insufficient; its principles must be actively implemented. He urged those in government to engage in self-reflection, questioning whether they are genuinely acting in accordance with the Constitution’s spirit. He warned that actions contrary to the Constitution would be a betrayal of Ambedkar’s vision.
Regarding women’s reservation, Pilot reiterated that the Congress party has consistently supported this initiative. He recalled the efforts made under former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Sonia Gandhi to pass a one-third women’s reservation bill, which ultimately failed. He expressed that if the current government wishes to implement women’s reservation, Congress would support it, provided there are no compromises in the process.
Pilot voiced concerns about the potential delays in women’s reservation under the pretext of the delimitation commission and census, calling for a comprehensive discussion in a parliamentary meeting. He noted that while delimitation could be based on census data, it should not be used as an excuse to postpone decisions.
Addressing the situation in Rajasthan, Pilot criticized the government for the delays in panchayat and local body elections, alleging that elections are being intentionally postponed, weakening democratic institutions. He also raised concerns about the near-stagnation of the MGNREGA scheme and administrative apathy.
Pilot expressed worry over law and order, particularly regarding women’s safety in Jaipur, urging the government to prioritize public safety and grant officials the freedom to act impartially.
He concluded by stating that mere announcements are not enough; they must be implemented at the grassroots level. He highlighted that political interference is hampering administrative functions and needs to be curtailed. On upcoming elections, Pilot commented that high voter turnout in Kerala signals a desire for change, while Assam is expected to be a close contest. He expressed confidence that Congress could secure a majority there, asserting that dissatisfaction with the current government is widespread, and people are looking for change.
