Dehradun, March 6: Uttarakhand, known as the land of the gods, is famous for its ancient heritage and magnificent temples. Among its notable attractions is the Shri Gopinath Temple located in Gopeshwar, Chamoli. This temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, is renowned for its unique architectural style and religious significance.
The Gopinath Temple was constructed between the 9th and 11th centuries by the Katyuri rulers. Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has emphasized its importance, sharing a grand video of the temple on his social media platform, X.
In his post, he wrote, “The Gopinath Temple in Gopeshwar, Chamoli, is dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is famous for its remarkable architecture. Special prayers are held here during auspicious festivals like Mahashivaratri and Holi. Be sure to visit this sacred temple when you come to Chamoli.”
This ancient temple is believed to have been built during the Katyuri dynasty (approximately 9th to 11th century). Its unique features include a dome-shaped spire and a sanctum sanctorum measuring 30 square feet, accessible through 24 doors.
Nestled amidst the natural beauty of Chamoli, the temple is also known as the winter seat of Rudranath, one of the Panch Kedar shrines. The main attraction is a 5-meter tall trident in the courtyard, made from eight different metals.
A popular legend surrounds this ancient trident. It is said that it cannot be moved by physical strength, but if a devotee approaches with true faith, the trident begins to vibrate upon being touched.
During the winter months, when the gates of the Rudranath temple (one of the Panch Kedar shrines) are closed, the festival idol of Lord Rudranath is brought here. In addition to Shiva, the temple complex houses idols of Parshuram, Ganesh, and Bhairav. There is also a sacred ‘Vaitarani Kund’ located here. The temple is considered a significant stop between Kedarnath and Badrinath, where special prayers are conducted on Mahashivaratri.
