Daytime Heat, Nighttime Chill: Jharkhand Sees Unusual April Weather Pattern

Ranchi, April 19 — Jharkhand is currently experiencing an unusual weather pattern, with scorching heat during the day followed by a noticeable chill at night. While parts of INDIA are reeling under heatwaves, the eastern state has recorded relatively mild temperatures and even unexpected rain and hail in some districts, including the capital city Ranchi.

Mixed Weather Conditions in Ranchi

Residents of Ranchi witnessed rapidly changing weather on Friday, with intense sunshine giving way to dark clouds, followed by sudden rainfall and hailstorms. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) noted a drop in daytime temperatures, with Ranchi recording a maximum of 32.4°C, below the seasonal average.

The drop in temperatures stands in sharp contrast to April 2024, when parts of Jharkhand saw temperatures crossing 40°C, including Godda, which reached 44°C on April 24, 2024. In comparison, this year’s April 19 reading in Godda was a significantly cooler 25.5°C.

Statewide Temperature Overview

Unlike previous years, no heatwave conditions have been reported so far in 2025 across key districts. Here’s how some major towns in Jharkhand fared on Saturday:

  • Jamshedpur: 34.6°C

  • Daltonganj: 39.6°C

  • Bokaro: 31.5°C

  • Ranchi: 32.4°C

IMD officials say the temperature dip and sporadic rain are likely due to local convection and atmospheric instability, possibly influenced by a western disturbance affecting northern and eastern India.

Temperature Drop Compared to Last Year

In April 2024, as many as 10 districts in Jharkhand recorded temperatures above 40°C, including:

  • East Singhbhum: 43.7°C

  • Pakur & Seraikela-Kharsawan: 43.4°C

  • Sahibganj: 41.4°C

  • Jamtara: 41.9°C

  • Palamu: 41.2°C

  • Garhwa & Deoghar: 41.1°C

  • Simdega: 40.2°C

  • West Singhbhum: 40.6°C

This year, however, not a single district has touched the 40°C mark yet, with even the typically hot regions like Daltonganj staying below 40°C.

Looking Ahead

According to the IMD, Jharkhand will continue to experience moderate temperatures and isolated showers over the coming days. Residents are advised to stay updated on weather forecasts as localized weather disturbances could lead to more rainfall, hail, or gusty winds.
