Western Disturbance Triggers Intense Weather Activity in Multiple Districts

Raipur, May 4 A Western Disturbance and associated trough passing through northern Chhattisgarh have significantly impacted the region’s weather. For the past several days, evening thunderstorms, gusty winds up to 60 km/h, rainfall, and hail have affected cities including Raipur, Durg, Balod, Pendra, Sarguja, and Bastar. The INDIA Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a 3-day alert for the continuation of such conditions through May 6.

Lightning Strike Kills School Teacher in Sarguja

Tragedy struck in Sarguja, where a teacher was killed by a lightning strike during Saturday’s storm. Several other areas also reported hailstorms and localized flooding, leading to property damage and power outages. Rain, thunder, and hail hit Raipur and its surrounding areas, causing night temperatures to dip after a scorching afternoon.

In Raj Nagar-Jagdalpur, rain did not deter local protests as demonstrators blocked the main road demanding a cemetery.

Temperature Trends: Heat Persists with Evening Relief

Despite the stormy evenings, maximum temperatures remain largely unaffected, offering only partial relief from the prevailing heat.

• Bilaspur: Hottest at 40°C, 3°C below average

• GPM (Gourela-Pendra-Marwahi): Max 35.5°C, min 23°C

• Ambikapur (Sarguja): Max 36.2°C, min 22.4°C, both below average

• Durg: Max 38.6°C, min 22°C, 4.6°C below average

The IMD forecasts partly cloudy skies with afternoon thunderstorms and light rain across most districts in the coming days. While temperatures may remain near normal during the day, strong winds and evening showers will offer temporary cooling.

• Hailstorm possibility remains for select districts

• Wind speeds between 50–60 km/h forecasted

• Residents advised to stay indoors during storm events and avoid open fields
