Jaipur, May 24 – In a significant weather development, the monsoon is expected to enter Rajasthan five days ahead of schedule, with June 20 now likely to mark its arrival, compared to the usual date of June 25, according to the INDIA Meteorological Department (IMD).

This early onset follows the nationwide advancement of the monsoon, which has already reached Kerala eight days ahead of its normal schedule.
Severe Heat Persists in Rajasthan
Even as monsoon hopes rise, Rajasthan continues to reel under intense heatwave conditions, especially in western regions. Cities like Jaipur, Bikaner, Churu, and Sri Ganganagar are reporting night temperatures above 30°C, with Bikaner recording its hottest night of the season at 33°C.
The IMD has issued a red alert for Bikaner and Churu, and an orange alert for Sri Ganganagar, Hanumangarh, Jodhpur, Barmer, Jaisalmer, Sikar, and Jhunjhunu, warning of continued heatwave and severe heatwave conditions.
Western Rajasthan Braces for Extreme Heat
According to Radheyshyam Sharma, Director of the Jaipur Meteorological Centre, areas in western Rajasthan such as Barmer, Jaisalmer, Bikaner, Sri Ganganagar, Phalodi, and Churu are expected to experience severe heatwaves over the next three days, with daytime temperatures potentially exceeding 48°C. Notably, heatwave conditions at night are also forecasted for these regions.
On Friday, Jaisalmer recorded the highest temperature of the season at 48°C, followed by:
-
Barmer: 47.5°C
-
Bikaner: 46.4°C
-
Churu: 45.6°C
-
Jodhpur: 44.5°C
-
Ganganagar: 44.1°C
Thunderstorm and Rain Likely in Eastern Rajasthan
While the western districts brace for extreme heat, eastern Rajasthan is expected to receive scattered thunderstorms and rain over the next 3–4 days. Jaipur, Kota, Udaipur, and Bharatpur divisions may see evening thunderstorms and light to moderate rainfall starting today, providing some relief from the oppressive heat.
The IMD has placed 22 districts under rain and thunderstorm alert, signaling a shift in weather patterns as pre-monsoon activities intensify.
Civic Measures and Public Preparedness
In response to the scorching heat, local administrations have taken preventive steps. In Bikaner, for instance, green shade structures have been installed at public locations like KEM Road railway crossing to protect pedestrians from direct sunlight.
Similarly, markets in Shekhawati region, especially Sikar, have seen reduced daytime activity as locals avoid venturing out in extreme temperatures.
Outlook: From Heatwaves to Monsoon Showers
As Rajasthan endures its peak summer phase, all eyes are now on the anticipated early arrival of the monsoon, which promises to bring much-needed relief. The weather office has advised citizens to stay hydrated, avoid outdoor activities during peak hours, and keep track of daily updates as the weather transitions rapidly across the state.
