IRCTC Uses Artificial Intelligence to Block Over 2 Crore Suspicious Accounts in Major Crackdown on Bots

In a significant move to ensure fairness and transparency in online railway ticket bookings, the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (

IRCTC
)
has suspended more than 2.4 crore suspicious user accounts over the last six months. This action, made possible by the use of artificial intelligence (AI), comes as a major relief to genuine passengers who have long been troubled by the misuse of bots and automated booking systems.

Bots Disrupting Genuine Commuters

Online ticket bookings, especially for Tatkal quotas, have often been hijacked by ticket touts using bots or illegal software. These systems allow them to book multiple tickets within seconds, leaving ordinary users scrambling for availability. Recognizing this widespread problem, IRCTC deployed an AI-based detection system that has successfully flagged and deactivated over 2 crore such bot-controlled or suspicious accounts.

In addition to this, nearly 20 lakh more accounts are currently under scrutiny. These accounts are undergoing Aadhaar and ID verification to ensure authenticity and weed out those engaged in unfair practices.

Tatkal Booking Now Fairer and More Transparent

One of the primary areas affected by this malpractice was Tatkal ticket booking, where users often found it nearly impossible to secure tickets within seconds of the quota opening. The recent AI-led cleanup is expected to bring relief to genuine users, restoring faith in the IRCTC’s digital infrastructure.

To further streamline the booking process, IRCTC has introduced a new policy giving priority to Aadhaar-linked users during the first 10 minutes of Tatkal booking. Additionally, authorized agents have been barred from booking during this window, ensuring that individual users get a fair chance.

Aadhaar Verification Becomes Essential

Despite over 13 crore active users on the IRCTC platform, only 1.2 crore users have linked their Aadhaar. This verification process is now being made central to IRCTC’s efforts to sanitize its user database. Accounts found to be unverified and suspicious may face permanent deactivation.

IRCTC is now urging all users to link their accounts with Aadhaar to avoid any disruptions in their booking process. Doing so ensures a smoother ticketing experience and guards against the risk of account suspension.

A Safer and More Equitable Booking Ecosystem

This AI-powered initiative reflects Indian Railways’ broader commitment to leveraging cutting-edge technology for public good. By cracking down on fraudulent accounts and enhancing the verification process, IRCTC is building a more secure, efficient, and transparent digital ecosystem for railway travelers.

The message is clear: link your Aadhaar, book your tickets fairly, and enjoy a hassle-free travel experience.
