Bhubaneswar – In a major pro-employee initiative ahead of the annual Rath Yatra festival, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has approved a significant hike in retirement benefits for temporary government employees. The lump sum payment upon retirement or termination of service has been raised from ₹1.5 lakh to ₹2.5 lakh, marking a landmark step in employee welfare.

Relief for Temporary and Contractual Workers
Under the revised scheme, any temporary government worker whose tenure ends — irrespective of whether they are regularized or have completed five years of service — will now receive a one-time payment of ₹2.5 lakh.
Additionally, employees who have served in regular positions for over five years will now be entitled to a minimum gratuity of ₹2.5 lakh upon retirement, ensuring a safety net for long-serving personnel.
This policy shift is expected to benefit thousands of temporary and contract-based workers who have been an essential part of the state’s workforce but were previously excluded from such retirement benefits.
Automatic Increase Every Two Years
To ensure the retirement package keeps pace with inflation and changing financial needs, the government has also announced an automatic 10% increase in this one-time benefit every two years. Crucially, departments will not be required to seek prior approval from the Finance Department to implement these periodic hikes, allowing faster and smoother execution.
This move not only offers financial security but also recognizes the vital contributions made by temporary employees across various departments such as health, education, revenue, and public infrastructure.
A Morale Booster Ahead of Rath Yatra
Announced just a day before the revered Rath Yatra festival, the decision is being seen as a goodwill gesture and a morale booster for the state’s workforce. The timing underscores the state government’s commitment to social and economic welfare, coinciding with an occasion celebrated for divine blessings and renewal.
As per tradition, Lord Jagannath, accompanied by his siblings Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra, will embark on the grand procession to the Gundicha Temple. The trio will travel on their iconic chariots — Nandighosha, Taladhwaja, and Darpadalan — drawing lakhs of devotees from across the country.
This symbolic moment of compassion and giving finds a strong parallel in the government’s announcement, which aligns with the spirit of service and dignity for every worker.
