Kathmandu, March 8: In the recent parliamentary elections in Nepal, the Rashtriya Swatantra Party (RSP) has not only achieved political success but has also set a remarkable example for women’s representation. Out of the 16 female candidates fielded by the party, 13 emerged victorious, marking a significant achievement in Nepal’s electoral politics.
Political parties have often been criticized for placing women in constituencies with low chances of winning. However, the results from the RSP have largely challenged this perception. According to The Kathmandu Post, the party’s female candidates received substantial public support, with most winners defeating their opponents by significant margins. This outcome indicates that voters are now more positively inclined towards female leadership than ever before.
Despite the successes, the party faced losses in three constituencies. Binita Khatayat lost to Gyanendra Shahi of the RSP in Jumla. In Sunsari-1, Sarin Tamang was defeated by Harka Raj Rai of the Labor Culture Party, while Tashi Lhanzom finished fourth in Humla.
Among the notable victories was Ranjoo Darshana, who secured 15,455 votes from Kathmandu-1, defeating the prominent Nepali Congress candidate, Thapa Chhetri, by a wide margin. Similarly, Tosima Karki won from Lalitpur-3 for the second consecutive time, retaining her seat with 43,096 votes, surpassing Nepali Congress’s Jitendra Kumar Shrestha and UML’s Raj Kaji Maharjan.
Another significant win was achieved by Sobita Gautam, who previously represented Kathmandu-2. This time, contesting from Chitwan-3, she garnered 59,277 votes, defeating UML candidate Renu Dahal, a former mayor of Bharatpur Metropolitan City.
In Morang-6, Rubina Acharya, an MBA graduate from Kathmandu University, won impressively with 55,513 votes, outpacing Congress leader Shekhar Koirala and UML’s Binod Dhakal. In Morang-5, public health graduate Asha Jha secured 30,434 votes, defeating Congress candidate Phool Kumar Lalwani by over 20,000 votes.
The RSP also celebrated two significant victories in Jhapa. Nisha Dangi won from Jhapa-1 with 45,680 votes, defeating Congress candidate Keshav Raj Pandey. Dangi had previously set a record as the youngest member of Nepal’s parliament in 2022. Meanwhile, former Deputy Speaker Indira Nagar Maga won from Jhapa-2 with 60,110 votes, defeating UML candidate Devaraj Ghimeri by a large margin.
Nitima Bhandari Karki secured victory from Siraha-1 with 44,181 votes, while agricultural entrepreneur Komal Gyawali reached parliament from Kailali-1 with 17,862 votes. In Kaski-3, social worker Bina Gurung defeated Congress candidate Manoj Gurung with 37,750 votes. Additionally, social media activist Ashika Tamang won from Dhading-1 with 39,128 votes, surpassing UML’s Land Prasad Tripathi and Maoist leader Rajendra Prasad Pandey.
These results clearly demonstrate that the role of women in Nepal’s new politics is rapidly increasing. The success of the RSP’s female candidates not only reflects the party’s organizational growth but also signals that Nepali voters are increasingly ready to embrace new faces and female leadership.
