Indias Secular Spirit Questioned After T20 World Cup Celebration at Temple

New Delhi, March 10: INDIA clinched the T20 World Cup 2026 title by defeating New Zealand. Following the victory, team captain Suryakumar Yadav, along with Jay Shah and Gautam Gambhir, visited a Hanuman temple. This act sparked controversy, with TMC MP and former cricketer Kirti Azad expressing his disapproval on social media, stating that such actions contradict the secular nature of the country.

In an interview, Azad emphasized that players represent the entire nation, which comprises individuals of all faiths. He recalled the 1983 World Cup win, highlighting the diverse religious backgrounds of the team members. “Players and sports have no religion; they belong to their team. These individuals have made us proud,” he remarked, praising players Sanju Samson and Mohammed Siraj.

Regarding the temple visit, Azad questioned the implications of such actions, asking what differentiates India from Pakistan. He stated, “I am a Hindu myself, but I never mix religion with sports. Art has no religion, and that’s why I opposed it. I used to visit temples before and after every match.” He reiterated, “Our country is secular, and what happened was not right.”

Azad had previously criticized the temple visit on social media, expressing shame over Team India’s actions. He pointed out that during the 1983 World Cup, under Kapil Dev’s captaincy, the team included players from Hindu, Muslim, Sikh, and Christian backgrounds. “Why is the Indian cricket trophy being dragged into religious contexts? Why not a mosque, church, or gurdwara?” he questioned.

He further asserted that the team represents India, not just the families of Suryakumar Yadav or Jay Shah. “Siraj never took the trophy to a mosque, and Sanju never took it to a church. Sanju played a crucial role in the tournament and was named Player of the Tournament. This trophy belongs to all Indians of every faith. It is not a victory for one religion,” he concluded.
