Hindustan Zinc Launches Rajasthans First Electric Bus Service for Green Mobility

Udaipur, April 20: Hindustan Zinc Limited, a leading global producer of zinc and silver, has taken a significant step towards promoting green mobility in Rajasthan. The company has launched the state’s first and largest fleet of electric buses at its zinc smelter in Debari, Udaipur. This initiative is in partnership with Enviro Wheels Mobility Private Limited, and it marks the commencement of operations for a total of 41 electric buses. The primary goal is to reduce pollution caused by vehicles used for employee transportation. By replacing diesel buses with electric ones, the company anticipates a reduction of approximately 11,000 tons of carbon emissions during the contract period.

CEO Arun Mishra expressed that the company prioritizes environmental responsibility alongside industrial development. “Our aim is to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050 or earlier. The introduction of electric buses for our employees is part of this commitment, enabling us to create a safe and clean mining ecosystem for the future,” he stated. In line with its membership in the International Council on Mining and Metals, Hindustan Zinc is integrating climate responsibility initiatives into its daily operations, turning global commitments into reality at a fundamental level.

In recent years, the company has launched a comprehensive program to enhance energy efficiency, significantly reduce its carbon footprint, and accelerate the transition to clean energy. It has increased the share of renewable energy in its total energy mix to nearly 18%, showcasing solid progress towards its decarbonization goals. A key milestone in this journey is the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for a 530-megawatt round-the-clock renewable energy supply, expected to meet over 70% of Hindustan Zinc‘s total energy needs. The first flow of renewable energy under this agreement commenced in the last financial year, indicating a decisive shift towards clean energy sources.

Due to these efforts, Hindustan Zinc has been recognized as the world’s most sustainable metal and mining company for the third consecutive year in the S&P Global Corporate Sustainability Assessment 2025. This initiative not only promotes electric vehicles in Rajasthan but also raises awareness about environmental conservation within the industrial sector.
