Kolkata, June 3: In a significant political development, 58 lawmakers from the Trinamool Congress (TMC) have formed a new faction under the leadership of expelled MLA Ritabrata Banerjee. This move is seen as a substantial blow to the party led by Mamata Banerjee.
Sources indicate that Ritabrata Banerjee and his supporting MLAs met with the Speaker of the West Bengal Assembly, Rathindranath Bose, to submit a letter of support from the 58 lawmakers. The letter demands that Ritabrata Banerjee be declared the leader of the legislative party and be granted the status of Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly.
Reports suggest that the new faction has also established its organizational structure. Javed Khan, Sandipan Saha, and Siuli Saha have been proposed as deputy leaders, while Akhrujjaman is suggested as the Chief Whip. According to Assembly sources, the Speaker has initiated the necessary procedures regarding this matter.
In a press conference, Ritabrata Banerjee claimed that two other MLAs are in contact with him and may soon join his faction. He described his group as the true opposition force in the Assembly, stating that this step was taken due to democratic values and discontent within the organization.
The controversy erupted after allegations of forged signatures related to the selection of the Leader of the Opposition, which led to the expulsion of Ritabrata Banerjee and Sandipan Saha for alleged anti-party activities.
Amidst this turmoil, TMC leadership has taken significant organizational steps by dissolving several key committees and frontal organizations in West Bengal. Political analysts view this move as an attempt to control the growing discontent within the party.
Senior TMC leader Firhad Hakim has resigned from the position of Mayor of Kolkata, marking another critical event amid the ongoing political upheaval within the party.
However, there has been no official statement from Mamata Banerjee regarding the entire situation. In the coming days, this development could influence the direction of West Bengal’s politics and the dynamics of the opposition.
