Internal Strife Intensifies in Punjab Congress Ahead of Elections

Chandigarh, July 7: The internal turmoil within the Punjab Congress has escalated as the state gears up for the upcoming assembly elections. Amidst ongoing disputes over leadership and organizational decisions, Priyanka Gandhi’s involvement has come to light. Reports indicate that a team dispatched by Priyanka Gandhi visited Chandigarh to gather feedback on the situation before returning to Delhi.

Meanwhile, the faction led by former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi has leveled serious allegations against Bhupesh Baghel, the party’s in-charge for Punjab. Channi’s group claims that Baghel failed to accurately inform the high command about the true state of the Punjab Congress, leading to the central leadership’s decision to retain Amarinder Singh Raja Warring as the state president.

Leaders associated with Channi’s faction have expressed a lack of faith in Baghel, deeming any meeting with him unnecessary. Consequently, they boycotted Baghel’s meeting. On the other hand, Baghel has requested two days to work on the issues, promising to clarify the situation afterward. He also mentioned his willingness to visit anyone who invites him for tea.

Baghel has called two crucial meetings in Chandigarh. The first, attended by executive presidents and officials, was boycotted by Channi’s faction. The second meeting, scheduled with district presidents believed to be supporters of Raja Warring, is also anticipated. Following these, Baghel plans to meet senior leaders one-on-one.

Baghel arrived in Chandigarh on Monday and intends to spend about five days in Punjab engaging with party leaders. The Congress high command aims to quell the internal factionalism within the Punjab Congress before the elections and maintain organizational unity.

In contrast, Charanjit Singh Channi remains stationed in Delhi. Reports suggest he plans to meet with the Congress high command, presenting a dossier related to the statements made by current state president Raja Warring. Alongside him, MPs like Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa and others are preparing to meet with the central leadership. The political landscape may become clearer after Rahul Gandhi returns from abroad.

Channi is reportedly receiving support from one MP and six MLAs. Meanwhile, Raja Warring has also ramped up his activities. He is attempting to convey a message of organizational unity on social media by referring to Channi’s faction meetings as “Unity of Strength.”

In the meantime, leaders considered to be aligned with Raja Warring have initiated disciplinary actions. The chairman of the Punjab Congress Disciplinary Committee and Jalandhar North MLA, Bawa Henry, has issued a notice to former MLA Madanlal Jalalpur, demanding a response within three days. Currently, Warring is said to have the backing of one MP, but no MLA has openly supported him yet.

The ongoing strife within the Punjab Congress poses a significant challenge for the party ahead of the upcoming assembly elections. While Channi’s faction is actively pushing for a leadership change, the high command is striving to maintain organizational balance. All eyes are now on the next decisions from the Congress leadership.
