Jaipur, October 5: BJP state president Madan Rathore held a press conference on Monday at the party’s state office in Jaipur, addressing the opposition’s accusations of “vote theft” and misuse of power. He asserted that the BJP respects the public mandate and does not attempt to gain votes through the misuse of authority during elections.
“To a thief, everyone appears to be a thief,” Rathore stated, emphasizing the integrity of the BJP.
He claimed that Congress state president Govind Singh Dotasra won the municipal elections in his constituency, Laxmangarh, by a single vote. Rathore argued that if the BJP had intended to misuse power, it could have influenced the outcome of such a close result, but chose not to intervene.
Rathore also targeted former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, accusing him of enticing BSP legislators to join Congress. He alleged that Gehlot offered ministerial positions and other inducements to secure support for his government, labeling this as “vote theft” that occurred not once, but twice.
“Gehlot has devoured the entire BSP elephant,” Rathore remarked.
The merger of BSP legislators into Congress has occurred twice in Rajasthan, both times under Gehlot’s leadership — first in 2009 and again in 2019, when all six BSP legislators elected on BSP tickets joined Congress. The 2019 merger was challenged in the Rajasthan High Court by both BSP and BJP.
Rathore’s key points included:
– On vote theft allegations: “To a thief, everyone appears to be a thief; the BJP does not need such tactics.”
– Referencing Laxmangarh: Congress won by a single vote; the result could have been altered if desired.
– Accusations against Gehlot: He offered ministerial positions and other inducements to BSP legislators, happening twice.
– On Congress’s arguments: The narrow margin of votes and allegations of power misuse cannot coexist.
– Critique of Congress leadership: Leaders are singing their own tunes.
Rathore questioned Congress’s electoral arguments, stating that if the BJP had misused power, the margin of victory would not have been so narrow. He condemned the opposition’s claims as an insult to democracy and the public mandate.
In response to Gehlot’s claims regarding Congress’s victory in the panchayat elections, Rathore suggested that the former chief minister was displaying confidence to cover his embarrassment. He criticized the Congress leadership for their inconsistent statements.
Rathore’s press conference took place around 5 PM, after which Gehlot demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar during a media interaction. Rathore had previously countered Congress’s performance on September 28.
