Jammu, October 14: Dr. Satish Poonia, the National General Secretary of the BJP and newly appointed in-charge of Jammu and Kashmir, held a meeting of the Jammu and Kashmir Core Committee at the BJP state office in Jammu on October 14. This marks his first visit to the region since taking on this role.
During his visit, Poonia engaged with the state working committee, legislators, and senior leaders to discuss organizational matters and coordination. Meetings with the heads of various fronts and cells are scheduled for the following day.
New Responsibilities Assigned
Poonia was appointed as the in-charge of Jammu and Kashmir during an organizational reshuffle on September 23, initiated by BJP National President Nitin Nawin. He replaced Tarun Chugh, who has been assigned to oversee Gujarat. Reena Kashyap from Himachal Pradesh has been appointed as co-in-charge.
Previously, in August, Poonia was given charge of Punjab and is also the national in-charge of the BJP’s Scheduled Tribes front. In Punjab, he is supported by Virendra Sachdeva and Dr. Alka Gurjar, a Rajya Sabha MP from Rajasthan, as co-in-charges.
BJP’s Focus in Jammu and Kashmir
Panchayat and urban body elections in Jammu and Kashmir have been pending for a considerable time. During the Core Committee meeting held in Jammu on October 3, B.L. Santosh, the BJP’s National General Secretary (Organization), expressed concerns that the Omar Abdullah government does not seem inclined to conduct these elections, linking it to the restoration of statehood.
He urged party workers to pressure the National Conference government to hold these elections without delay during the Seva Sankalp campaign. Poonia’s visit is taking place against this backdrop.
From Churu to Jammu
Satish Poonia hails from Sadulpur in Churu district and is a Rajya Sabha MP from Rajasthan. He took his oath as a member of the Rajya Sabha in July. Poonia has been serving as the National General Secretary of the BJP since August 17, 2026.
He has previously held the position of Rajasthan BJP State President and was in charge of Haryana. Regarding Punjab, he has stated that the BJP will contest all 117 seats in the upcoming 2027 assembly elections.
