CJP Leaders Remanded in Judicial Custody Following Protest at Jantar Mantar

New Delhi, October 14: Following a protest at Jantar Mantar, two leaders of the Cockroach People’s Party (CJP), Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka, have been remanded in judicial custody for five days by a Special Executive Magistrate (SEM) court. A third leader, Ajinkya Shinde, was released on personal bail.

The trio was taken into custody by the Delhi Police during the protest on Tuesday. They were arrested around 3 AM and transported to the Parliament Street police station, where they were presented in court the following morning.

Police Arguments in Court

During the hearing, the Delhi Police argued that the accused had disturbed public peace and violated the conditions set in their bond. According to the police, they had called people to join the protest, which warranted legal action. Consequently, the court ordered their five-day judicial custody.

CJP Outlines Three Charges

CJP’s legal advisor, Ratna Singh, shared on social media that the leaders were arrested at the Parliament Street police station. She stated that they faced charges of trespassing without permission, violating bond conditions, and obstructing government officials in their duties. Singh also mentioned that both leaders could be sent to Tihar Jail for judicial custody.

Jantar Mantar No Longer a Protest Site

This action comes at a time when the Delhi Police has de-notified Jantar Mantar as a protest site. Instead, Ramleela Maidan, Burari Maidan, and the CBD Ground in East Delhi have been designated for protests. CJP activists had reached a barricaded area demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The police have filed an FIR for unauthorized entry into Jantar Mantar, including sections related to the peace bond the leaders had previously signed.

Prior Detention at Airport

Just four days earlier, Das and Ranka were also detained at the airport on October 10 while attempting to protest against the Chief Election Commissioner. They were taken into precautionary custody at the airport, along with Abhijit Deepke, but were later ordered to be released by a Special Executive Magistrate in South-West Delhi.
