Jaipur, October 20: Protests have erupted outside the Jaipur Police Commissionerate as Congress leaders and workers demand the filing of an FIR regarding the alleged assault on Ritu Barala, the National Secretary of NSUI. Former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot joined the protest early Monday morning. Following his participation, State President Govind Singh Dotasra urged party workers to converge in Jaipur the same day.
The protest is a response to the lack of action from the police regarding the FIR, which was requested after an incident involving Barala in Delhi on October 13.
Gehlot expressed his frustration on social media, questioning the government’s delay in registering the FIR. He stated, “We will not remain silent until justice is served. The BJP government must explain why there is a delay in filing the FIR.”
Dotasra emphasized the need for a decisive response against the Rajasthan police’s refusal to register the FIR. He called on Congress workers from across the state to gather in Jaipur and demand accountability from the government.
“We will oppose every attempt to suppress the right to justice in a democratic manner,” Dotasra stated.
Opposition leader Tikaram Julie highlighted the inconsistency in law enforcement, arguing that if FIRs can be filed in other states, there should be no reason for Rajasthan to be an exception. The protest saw participation from several prominent figures, including Dotasra, MLAs Rafiq Khan and Ameen Kaghzi, former minister Pratap Singh Khachariyawas, and many others.
The incident revolves around Ritu Barala, who alleged that she was assaulted during a protest in Delhi demanding the resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner. Following the incident, she detailed her experience at a press conference with Rahul Gandhi on October 14.
On October 19, Barala filed a complaint at the Motidungri police station in Jaipur, requesting the registration of an FIR against the involved Delhi police personnel. When no action was taken, Congress leaders and workers staged a sit-in at the Commissionerate. As of now, there has been no official statement from the police or state government regarding the reasons for the FIR’s delay.
In a show of solidarity, Congress leaders spent the night at the Jaipur Police Commissionerate, laying down mattresses in protest.
The demand is for a zero FIR, which allows a complaint to be registered at any police station, regardless of where the incident occurred. Rafiq Khan urged Congress workers to gather at the police Commissionerate by 9 AM to support the protest.
Former Deputy Chief Minister Sachin Pilot also voiced his concerns, stating that Barala had shared her experience with Rahul Gandhi and was encouraged to file a complaint in Rajasthan. He questioned the reasons behind the ongoing struggle to register the FIR and called for immediate action against the perpetrators.
The situation remains tense as the Congress party continues to push for justice for Ritu Barala.
