Apple Reportedly Airlifted 1.5 Million iPhones from India to Sidestep Trump’s Tariffs

NEW DELHI/WASHINGTON, April 12 In a strategic move to navigate around steep U.S. tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump, Apple has reportedly airlifted 600 tons of iPhones from India to the United States, marking one of its most aggressive supply chain shifts to date. The operation, involving chartered cargo flights, is said to have delivered approximately 1.5 million iPhones from its Indian production lines to American shores.

Apple’s Tactical Play to Dodge Tariff Surge

Sources close to the matter revealed that the push was designed to “beat the tariff”, which surged to a record 125% on imports from China, where Apple has traditionally concentrated its iPhone manufacturing. In contrast, imports from India face only a 26% tariff, which is currently on a 90-day pause as part of a temporary exclusion announced by Trump.

In a show of urgency, six cargo jets—each capable of carrying 100 tons—reportedly departed from Chennai Airport in southern India since March. Apple had to lobby Indian airport officials to create a “green corridor” that slashed customs clearance times from 30 hours to just six, replicating fast-track procedures the company already uses in China.

India’s Role Grows in Apple’s Supply Chain

The report underscores Apple’s accelerating reliance on India as a manufacturing alternative to China. Apple’s suppliers Foxconn and Tata currently operate three production facilities in the country, with two more under development. According to Indian government sources, Apple has ramped up production by 20%, added more workers, and extended factory operations to Sundays—traditionally a rest day in India.

Foxconn’s Chennai plant, which produced 20 million iPhones last year, is leading this surge. The Indian government, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has reportedly instructed officials to support Apple’s logistical expansion efforts, reinforcing India’s ambitions to become a global manufacturing hub.

Surging Shipments and U.S. Distribution

Commercial customs data shows a sharp spike in Apple’s export values from India. Foxconn’s U.S.-bound shipments jumped to $770 million in January and $643 million in February—a dramatic rise from previous monthly values ranging between $110 million and $331 million.

Over 85% of these shipments were offloaded in Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, and San Francisco, reflecting Apple’s efforts to rapidly stock U.S. retail channels amid looming tariff escalations.

iPhone Prices at Risk

With Apple shipping over 220 million iPhones annually, any disruption in supply chain or tariff-driven cost increases could have ripple effects. At the now-active 125% China tariff, the iPhone 16 Pro Max could see its U.S. price rise from $1,599 to as much as $2,300, according to analysts at Rosenblatt Securities.

Currently, around 20% of iPhones sold in the U.S. originate from India, according to Counterpoint Research—a figure expected to grow as Apple diversifies production and hedges against geopolitical risks.

Looking Ahead

While neither Apple nor the Indian aviation ministry has officially commented, the high-speed airlift operation highlights Apple’s behind-the-scenes agility in responding to trade tensions. As the U.S. administration maintains a hard stance on China, India continues to benefit as a preferred manufacturing destination for the world’s most valuable tech brand.
