New Indian Ambassador Vikram Doraiswamy Arrives In Beijing Amidst Efforts To Normalize India-China Relations Daily Udaipur

New Delhi, May 4: Vikram Doraiswamy has officially taken over as India‘s new ambassador to China, arriving in Beijing to assume his responsibilities. His appointment comes at a crucial time as both nations strive to mend their diplomatic ties. Doraiswamy’s arrival was announced by the spokesperson for the Chinese embassy in India, Yu Jing, on the social media platform X. He was welcomed by Li Jianbo, Deputy Director of the Asian Affairs Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in China. Doraiswamy first landed in Shanghai on Saturday, where he was greeted by Consul General Pratik Mathur and other officials before heading to Beijing.

The new Indian ambassador has chosen a Chinese name, “Wei Jiameng.” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian praised this choice during a press conference on March 20. He stated, “China welcomes the new ambassador Wei Jiameng and will provide all possible support for him to assume his duties in China.”

In Mandarin, “Wei” is a common surname that phonetically resembles the “Vi” in Vikram. Historically, during the Warring States period, Wei was a powerful state. “Jia” means auspicious or commendable, while “meng” translates to alliance, together implying “a person who forms an excellent alliance.” This has significant diplomatic implications in the context of current India-China relations.

Doraiswamy, an Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer from the 1992 batch, replaces Pradeep Kumar Rawat. He possesses extensive experience in handling complex international relations, having represented India in several key countries. Before his appointment in Beijing, he served as India’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom.

His arrival comes at a time when tensions have existed over border disputes and other issues between the two nations.
