Ajmer, July 16: The recent mass death of thousands of fish at the historic Ana Sagar Lake has sparked political unrest. On Thursday, local Congress officials and activists staged a protest at Ana Sagar Chowpatty, demanding accountability from the administration.
Protesters arrived wearing masks due to the overwhelming stench from the decaying fish along the lake’s shore. Congress leaders accused the authorities of failing to take timely action, which led to the large-scale fish deaths and the subsequent foul odor permeating the area.
The Congress party claims that the administration drained a significant amount of water from the lake in anticipation of the monsoon. This rapid decrease in water levels adversely affected oxygen availability, leading to the fish suffocating and dying.
Demonstrators asserted that before reducing the water levels, proper environmental assessments and plans for aquatic life protection should have been established.
The stench was reportedly so severe that Congress activists had to wear masks during the protest. Leaders expressed concerns that the failure to promptly remove the dead fish and clean the lake is causing distress for locals, tourists, and businesses.
Congress workers demanded immediate removal of the dead fish, cleaning of the lake, and a scientific analysis of the water quality.
The Ana Sagar Lake is one of Ajmer’s key tourist attractions. However, the presence of dead fish and the accompanying odor have reportedly decreased visitor numbers at the Chowpatty.
Local business owners noted that the unpleasant smell is discouraging people from lingering near the lake, negatively impacting food stalls and other small businesses.
Congress leaders are calling for a high-level investigation into the matter and accountability for the negligent officials. They emphasized that the lake is a vital part of the city’s identity and environmental heritage, and negligence in its maintenance is unacceptable.
Protesters warned that if immediate cleaning and corrective actions are not taken, they will escalate their movement.
Experts suggest that to determine the actual causes of the mass fish deaths, it is essential to test for dissolved oxygen levels, temperature, pollution, ammonia, and other chemical elements in the water.
Currently, the administration has not provided a detailed official explanation regarding the causes of the fish deaths or the allegations surrounding the reduction of water levels. The true reasons behind this incident will only become clear after an investigation.
