Khunti, February 20 Residents of Khunti district headquarters woke up to an unexpected hailstorm on Thursday morning, transforming the landscape into a scene reminiscent of Kashmir’s snowfall. The storm, which began around 8 AM, lasted for 15-20 minutes, covering roads, rooftops, and open areas with layers of hail several inches thick.
While the hailstorm created a breathtaking spectacle, it also resulted in injuries and property damage. A schoolchild sustained injuries after being caught in the strong winds, and with the help of locals, was immediately rushed to Sadar Hospital for treatment.

Localized Impact: Hailstorm Limited to Khunti Headquarters
The hailstorm was confined to the Khunti district headquarters, sparing the surrounding areas of Karra, Torpa, Rania, Murhu, and Arki blocks. Fortunately, this limited the damage to crops and property in the broader region.
Severe Crop Damage Reported
Agricultural experts have confirmed heavy losses to mango, lychee, and vegetable crops due to the hailstorm.
Dr. Deepak Rai, Head of Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Khunti, stated that:
Mango crops suffered significant damage, as this is a crucial period for pollination and fruit development.
Vegetable and watermelon plantations were also affected, raising concerns for local farmers.
The unexpected hailstorm is expected to impact agricultural yield, affecting both farmers’ income and market supply.
Roadblocks and Power Outages
The hailstorm, accompanied by heavy rain and strong winds, caused several trees and electric poles to collapse, particularly on Dak Bungalow Road, leading to:
Temporary disruption of traffic and transportation.
Power outages in several areas due to fallen electricity wires.
Damage to roadside infrastructure in Khunti block and surrounding villages.
Authorities have begun restoration work, and efforts are underway to clear roads and restore power supply.
Weather Alert and Future Precautions
With Jharkhand witnessing erratic weather patterns, meteorologists have urged residents and farmers to stay vigilant against sudden climatic changes. The district administration has advised farmers to take preventive measures to minimize further crop losses.
While the unexpected hailstorm provided a picturesque moment for residents, its agricultural and infrastructural consequences highlight the challenges posed by extreme weather events. The authorities continue to assess the full extent of the damage and will likely announce relief measures for affected farmers.
