Why Did LPG Prices Rise?
Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri confirmed the hike and explained the rationale behind it. For beneficiaries under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, the subsidized cylinder price will now be ₹550, up from ₹500. For others, prices have been revised based on market dynamics and subsidy adjustments.
The Minister emphasized that the hike in excise duty on petroleum products is not being passed on to consumers directly. Instead, the increase aims to recover ₹43,000 crore in losses incurred by oil marketing companies due to gas subsidies and under-recoveries.
“We reassess the pricing every 2–3 weeks to ensure a balance between affordability and commercial sustainability,” Puri added.
Impact on Households
The LPG price hike is expected to marginally increase household expenses, especially for families not covered under the Ujjwala subsidy scheme. Industry analysts believe further revisions may follow based on global fuel prices and currency fluctuations.
Consumers are advised to check their local distributor or the official MyLPG.in portal for region-specific rates and subsidy details.
