Political Tensions Rise in Rajasthan Congress Amid Leadership Debate

Jaipur, August 1: A new political controversy has emerged within the Rajasthan Congress regarding the personal branding of its leaders. State Congress President Govind Singh Dotasra expressed his displeasure over the trend of prioritizing individual leaders over the party, without directly naming former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot.

This situation unfolded on July 30 when 309 workers from the Bharat Adivasi Party, led by former minister Mahendrajeet Singh Malviya, arrived in Jaipur to join the Congress party. Before the formal induction ceremony at the state Congress headquarters, these workers visited Gehlot’s residence in Civil Lines, which sparked discussions about leadership and organizational priorities within the party.

At Gehlot’s residence, the workers met with him and chanted slogans in support of making him Chief Minister for a fourth time. Their visit to Gehlot’s home before heading to the PCC office raised questions about the party’s focus on leadership versus organizational unity.

During the event at the Congress office, Dotasra emphasized that he works for the Congress party, not for individual branding. He advised the workers to refrain from slogans that promote any leader as a future Chief Minister.

Dotasra, in the presence of Malviya, questioned whether the newcomers should have first visited the party office instead of a leader’s residence. He stressed that the party is greater than any individual leader and that the organization must be prioritized over personal image.

He noted that the Congress has previously suffered political setbacks due to individualism. Instead of promoting one leader’s image, the focus should be on the organization, ideology, and collective leadership.

Dotasra also labeled Malviya’s earlier decision to leave Congress for the BJP as a political mistake. He urged Malviya and his supporters to work towards strengthening the Congress organization upon their return.

Malviya had left Congress before the 2024 Lok Sabha elections but rejoined in January 2026.

In response to the controversy, Gehlot dismissed rumors of internal strife within the Congress. He stated that there is no animosity between him and the state Congress president and that the Rajasthan Congress is completely united.

Gehlot clarified that no formal membership ceremony was held at his residence; the workers came to meet him, and the official joining took place later at the state Congress office. He mentioned that Malviya had been requesting for days to facilitate meetings with the workers.

The inclusion of workers from the Wagad region is seen as significant ahead of the upcoming panchayat and urban body elections. Congress leaders claim that the arrival of new members will strengthen the party’s organization in Bagidora and surrounding tribal areas.

However, the display of strength at Gehlot’s residence and Dotasra’s comments have linked the membership event to the internal politics of Congress and the debate over future leadership.
