New Delhi, July 22: Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, was detained by Delhi police during a protest near the Prime Minister’s residence. He was joined by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, and several other senior opposition leaders. The demonstration was against the paper leak incident and police action against student protesters during the CJP’s march to Parliament.
When police arrived to remove Rahul Gandhi from the protest site, he refused to leave. Eyewitnesses reported that he lay down on the ground in defiance of the police action. Subsequently, officers carried him to a vehicle, effectively ending the protest that had been ongoing for over two hours.
Opposition Leaders Begin Protest in the Afternoon
On Tuesday afternoon, senior Congress leaders gathered near the Prime Minister’s official residence on Lok Kalyan Marg and began their demonstration by sitting on the road. The protesters voiced their concerns over the paper leak incident, alleged irregularities in the examination system, and police action against students that occurred on Monday.
Rahul Gandhi accused the government of failing to take responsibility for serious issues affecting students. Congress leaders also demanded the resignations of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
Priyanka, Kharge, and Akhilesh Yadav Join the Protest
Alongside Rahul Gandhi were Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Mallikarjun Kharge, Samajwadi Party President Akhilesh Yadav, Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, and Kerala Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan, among other opposition MPs and leaders. NCP leader Supriya Sule also participated in the protest.
Before the demonstration, Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi visited Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital to meet injured protesters from the CJP’s march to Parliament. The Congress party alleged that excessive force was used against students peacefully voicing their demands.
Police Begin Detaining Leaders One by One
Despite ongoing discussions, the Delhi police began detaining Congress and opposition leaders one by one when the protest did not conclude. Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, and Mallikarjun Kharge were among those removed from the site.
Earlier, several leaders and activists, including former Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi and Congress MP K. Suresh, had also been detained. Congress leaders condemned the police action as undemocratic and vowed to continue their movement on student issues.
Government Sends Jitendra Singh for Talks
Central Minister Jitendra Singh and Home Secretary Govind Mohan arrived to negotiate with the protesting leaders. Jitendra Singh urged Rahul Gandhi to end the protest, stating that the government was prepared to discuss the paper leak issue in Parliament.
Later, Jitendra Singh claimed that Rahul Gandhi had initially demanded a discussion in Parliament but added the demand for the education minister’s resignation afterward. Congress opposed this, asserting that the call for accountability from Dharmendra Pradhan had been part of their previously stated demands regarding the paper leak.
